Oxygen Enriched Air
Nitrox (oxygen enriched air) is any mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, however the most common mixtures are Nitrox 32 and 36. The 32 stands for 32% oxygen and 68% nitrogen; the 36 for 36% oxygen and 64% nitrogen. Using Nitrox can lengthen allowable bottom times, yet it limits maximum depth. It's been around for almost 25 years, but only in the recreational arena for the past 15 years. At this time, the use of Nitrox preventing DCS has yet to be proven, but it certainly reduces the amount of nitrogen in your body.
The cost for a Nitrox filled tank is more than air, and your equipment (regulator and tank) needs to be 'cleaned' to insure safety when mixing oxygen.
Prerequisites for taking the Nitrox course are Open Water certification and 15 years of age or older.
